2018 Dodge Dakota Will Get Unibody Platform and Amazing Engines

Dodge’s pickup truck adventure seemed to be over when they lost their “jurisdiction” over Rams. However, the latest rumors suggest something completely different. The car manufacturer will reportedly bring back one nameplate from the dead. Yes, the 2018 Dodge Dakota is getting ready to make a comeback. What’s more interesting, it appears that it’s going to arrive pretty soon, most likely next January at the 2018 Detroit auto show.

2018 Dodge Dakota: Platform and Design

According to information we have, the 2018 Dakota will be nothing alike to the truck you may remember. What’s more interesting, it won’t anything in common with the next generation Ram 1500 as well. No, the pickup is going to have a special task. The carmaker knows that it won’t stand a chance in the same class with Ram’s popular truck or Ford’s fast-selling F-150, so they decided to build the unibody truck. Yes, the 2018 Dodge Dakota is planned to be a worthy rival of Honda’s Ridgeline and even the future Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Now, we can’t really know how the manufacturer did this. Moreover, we don’t know at which platform will ride the next generation Dakota truck. As far as we know, it may share the architecture with the Dodge Durango. Dodge’s mid-size SUV uses the same underpinnings as Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, so the idea holds water.

We have to admit that we haven’t seen any testing vehicle so far, so we can’t know how it will look the next-generation Dakota. However, we would not mind seeing the same or similar treatment as the current Durango. The manufacturer needs to pay a special attention to the interior. This will be a road-focused truck, so it needs to be luxurious and sophisticated inside.

Engine Options

On the other hand, we are pretty sure what’s going to be under the hood of the returnee. The carmaker will definitely add an iconic 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 mill. The mill has received a major revision a year ago, so it’s a perfect opponent to Ridgeline’s 3.5-liter unit. Dodge won’t stop there of course. The pickup will also receive an all-new 2.0-liter Hurricane engine, which is capable of delivering up to 300 hp. As for the diesel or some high-performance option, we highly doubt it will be available right away. However, if the truck becomes popular, the producer will definitely add an awesome Hellcat option under the hood.

There is nothing regarding the price of the 2018 Dodge Dakota. Still, keeping in mind that’s going to fight against Honda’s Ridgeline truck, it should get approximately the same price. More precisely, the base model should cost around $30K.
