The trucks buyers in midsized pickup segment get seriously spoilt for choice. Every major automobile company is sprucing up popular pickup models and new ones are being readied for release. However, some old models are still holding the forte despite not receiving notable changes for a long time. One such example is the Nissan Frontier. It is possibly among the oldest surviving midsized pickups still being sold. The 2019 model has got minor revamps and a possibility of a variant to be launched with diesel powertrain is there too. The new Frontier is going to be built at the company’s Mississippi plant as per the news.
2019 Nissan Frontier – Design Changes
The Frontier needs an exterior redesign- for sure. When placed beside segment rivals like Honda Ridgeline and GMC Canyon it looks somewhat dull. However, the new Frontier does look a tad fresh. The exterior color choices are Magnetic Black, Gun Metallic, Lava Red, and Brilliant Silver etc. The trim levels are Pro-4X, Desert Runner, SV, SL and S. It will be offered in 2 setups- king and crew cab.
The cabin of 2019 Nissan Frontier also receives some revamps. The top trims will get superior materials and upholstery options will also be on the better side. This time, the cabin gets quite a number of compartments and bins for small item storage. It is not clear if the cargo space will be enhanced.
The 2019 Frontier comes with good amenities and safety features are also quite decent. However, still, it gets left behind by some segment rivals. The amenities comprise of rearview camera, Bluetooth, USB, cruise control. The cabin gets automated climate control in top 2 trims as well. The Pro-4X is off road centric and so it gets underbody Skid plates, spray-on bedliner and Nissan Navigation System. The Desert Runner trim gets aluminum-alloy wheels, Satin chrome plated grille, all-terrain tires, Led fog lights etc.
2019 Nissan Frontier – Engine Options
The 2019 Nissan Frontier continues with existing engine options. This means that the 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 4.0-liter V-6 engines will be available. The first one delivers 152 hp and 171 pound-feet of torque. The V-6 produces 261 hp and peak torque of 281 lb-ft which leads to better towing capacity. There are some rumors about a new diesel engine too. A Renault-derived 2.3-liter turbo diesel engine may be used but nothing has been confirmed as of now. The towing capacity and payload may be enhanced for the new model with the diesel engine- if it is launched.
The 2018 Frontier gets many safety features like Traction Control System, Advanced Air Bag setup, Vehicle Immobilizer System and TPMS. However, sensor-based collision avoidance tech is still absent and this is where the new Toyota Tacoma leaves it behind. The Nissan Connect infotainment has been polished to an extent. It does look sleek and ease of use is better than predecessor but it cannot match the Chevy Mylink setup.
Price and availability
The release date of 2019 Frontier Diesel is yet to be declared by Nissan. The pricing is not known but the base model with the petrol engine should be around $20,000 while the diesel option could start at $25,000.
