2018 Isuzu D-Max X-Runner – Review

Isuzu is one Japanese car maker that has been trying hard to consolidate its footprint in various markets for some time. The D-Max is a popular light commercial vehicle from its stable. It shares the platform with a number of popular GM mid-sized trucks sold in the US including the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado. In Australia, it was earlier sold as Holden Rodeo but later the D-Max was launched there too. For 2018, the Isuzu D-Max gets many variants and the latest is X-runner. It is going to be made in limited numbers only. It is aimed at wooing younger buyers- as per the company sources.

2018 Isuzu D-Max X-Runner – Design

The 2018 Isuzu D-Max X-Runner is a good looking truck, though it does not exactly look rugged or as stylish as rivals like the new Nissan Titan XD. The exterior colors are Silky White Pearl and Cosmic Black. The red Isuzu badging, special body graphics and gunmetal grey grille with side steps help it stand out amidst other D max variants. A steel front skid plate is there to protect the vehicle from rocks and bumps.

The cabin is thoughtfully designed and it is not cramped by any means. The material quality of the cabin leaves almost no room for grudges. It is quite upscale and dashboard layout is sleek. The red-stitched steering wheel, piano black accents and two-tone sport seats ooze sleekness. There are a number of bins and compartments to let you store small items and gadgets with ease.

2018 Isuzu D-Max X-Runner – Engine Specs

The new X-Runner is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel engine and that is paired with an Aisin based six-speed automatic gearbox. The ride quality is pretty good and body roll is not an issue. The cabin is well insulated from road and engine noise. The inclusion of Hill Descent Control and electronic traction control ensure the ride on rough terrains without much fuss and grip on slippery roads remain firm.

This variant of 2018 Isuzu D-Max is laden with decent safety features and some required amenities. However, compared to rivals from Honda and GM- it fares rather poorly. You get single zone climate control- for example. You also get features like a rear-view camera, reversing sensors, airbags. However, you may grudge absence of radar-based accident avoidance technologies that have started appearing in the pickup segment. The Isuzu Entertainment System is passable but it is not on par with what Ford or FCA offers in their vehicles. The UI is not too user-friendly.

The 2018 Isuzu D-Max X-runner is now available in showrooms. The base price is approx $47,000.

Overall, there are a few things about the 2018 Isuzu D Max X-Runner that you will like. The exterior styling, sleek looking cabin and a powerful engine work in its favor. However, in term of amenities and advanced safety features, it does lag behind a majority of segment contenders. A revised pricing may help Isuzu attract more target buyers.
