The pickup truck segment is witnessing intense competition and the next years for this segment will expand further. All major car makers are busy sprucing up their models while some are also set to launch new models. FCA is in no mood to sit idle watching rivals GM and Ford have all the fun. To take on rivals like Chevy 3500 and Ford Super Duty series- FCA is revamping RAM 3500 HD. It has been spotted more than once in the latest few months wearing some heavy camouflage. With its powerful diesel engine and new design borrowed from new Ram 1500 this Heavy Duty will be a serious player in the years to come.
2020 Ram 3500 HD – New Design
The new HD lineup will inherit design from the smaller 1500 model and it will be presented as 2020 Ram 3500 HD. The font grille style differs from one trim to another. This is applicable to the light-duty RAM 1500 series as well. The front bumper has frame-mounted tow hooks and slots are there for cool air intake. Underbody skid plates are optional. It will be sold in a number of trims including Laramie, tradesman, SLT, Limited and Lone star etc. The truck will be sold in Regular, Mega and crew cab setups.
There are a few special editions for the 2020 RAM 3500 HD lineup as well. The Tungsten Edition makes the truck look rather enticing. These models get special exterior colors, extra chrome accents on the body and unique wheels. The tailgate gets larger RAM logo. The grille design is also unique. A Harvest Edition has also been released for the agricultural market. It is sold in colors like New Holland Blue and Case IH Red. The Night package is there which adds satin-black crosshair grille, matching running boards, black headlight bezels and satin black badges.
Spec and Features
The 2020 Ram Heavy Duty 3500 will be packed with good safety technologies and it also comes with decent amenities for a truck. The 8.4-inch touch display is there to control its Uconnect infotainment system. The setup is impressive and supports Bluetooth and Smartphone OS. The majority of buyers will opt for the Big Horn and Lone Star trims since they offer a good balance of feature and pricing. The Laramie Longhorn will please adventure lovers while the Limited trim is meant to woo luxury-loving truck buyers.
2020 Ram 3500 HD – Diesel Engine
The 2020 Ram Heavy Duty 3500 will be powered by a 6.7-liter inline-six turbodiesel unit. It makes an output of 385 horsepower and 930 pound-feet torque @1,700 rpm. We will not be surprised if these figures go up even more. This engine will be matched with an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission gearbox. A Hemi V-8 engine is also available for those buyers who do not want diesel powertrain. Every trim can be set up with 4WD and air ride suspension is optional. The maximum towing capacity is 30,000 pounds. This makes it outshine arch-rival Ford F-450 series. Payload limit is 7,390 pounds.
Price and Release Date
The 2020 Ram 3500 HD is now in testing phase and it will not be ready soon. However, it could be presented at Detroit Auto Show next year. If that happens, its mass production could start in the second half of 2019. The model with 6.7-liter Cummins under the hood will probably cost around $40,000.
